Vinesh Phogat CAS Hearing Verdict Live Updates
Vinesh Phogat appeared to be on a mission to prove her critics wrong at the 2024 Paris Olympics. However, it proved to be a disappointing conclusion to her glittering wrestling career, which ended without an Olympic medal. Antim Panghal was placed in the veteran's usual weight category, so she dropped down to 50 kg and qualified for Paris 2024.
Her first fight was against Tokyo 2020 champion Yui Susaki, who had been unbeaten since 2010, losing only three matches to the same opponent during that time. She also won gold in Tokyo without conceding a single point. Vinesh, trailing 0-2 with less than 40 seconds remaining, pulled off an incredible 3-2 victory and left in tears. Just a year ago, she was in New Delhi protesting former WFI chief Brij Bhushan Singh, and now she has secured a victory over the great Susaki.
Then she defeated Ukraine's Oksana Liyach in the quarterfinals, followed by an easy victory over Cuba's Yusneylys Guzman in the semis. But then, at the weigh-in for the final, she was 100 gm overweight and thus disqualified. Extremely shocked, the 29-year-old filed an appeal with the CAS for a joint silver medal, and she immediately announced her retirement.
The CAS has postponed its decision until August 13, and if it goes in Phogat's favour, India's medal tally in Paris 2024 will rise to seven. Phogat has two World Championship bronze medals, three CWG gold medals, and numerous medals from the Asian Games and Asian Championships credited to her name.
The CAS hearing was conducted by Dr. Annabelle Bennett AC SC (AUS), who is the sole arbitrator.
